About Merrilee Cleveland

Merrilee Cleveland's Fine Sculpture is imbued with a mysterious quality, seeming to be both ancient and contemporary at the same time. It is influenced by ancient art, literature, mythology, and cultural studies. Cast bronze makes up the majority of her works, however she has cast pieces in silver, gold, aluminum, and iron.

Merrilee holds a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. She was also privileged to attend the Chicago Academy for the Arts. Even before that art played a big role in her life. Growing up on the Oregon Coast she was surrounded by the fine arts. She attended courses at Sitka, and remembers firing ceramics at age 2. She still has photographs and negatives she developed herself at age 6.

Merrilee has enjoyed creating commissioned works of sculpture for several years, all the while continuing to follow her own muse. Merrilee's work is diverse, deep, whimsical, and sublime. Her greatest hope is to leave something behind that says “We were good”.
